Release Notes:
——–
When My Morning Jacket’s Jim James, Bright Eyes’ Conor Oberst and Mike Mogis,
and singer-songwriter M. Ward first got together in 2004 they were just
beginning to emerge as major voices of independent music. What started out as a
casual tour among friends swapping songs has evolved into a more fully developed
partnership on this debut album. “Monsters of Folk” is the tongue-in-cheek
moniker for their union, an indie-rock answer to the Traveling Wilburys. And
like the Wilburys, there is a casual affability to this self-titled debut
(Shangri-La Records) that sometimes eludes the participants when left on their
own. Indeed, “Whole Lotta Losin’ ” sounds like it could’ve been lifted from the
Wilburys’ 1988 debut. With three top-tier songwriters, each with a distinctive
voice and tone (James’ otherworldly swoon, Oberst’s quivering cry, Ward’s
confiding rasp), and a gifted multi-instrumentalist in Mogis, there’s enough
talent to create an ego overload, in keeping with most all-hype, no-substance
“supergroup” outings. But Monsters of Folk sounds surprisingly organic, the
foursome functioning as a self-contained group. The common ground for all is
musical Americana, steeped in country and a hint of gospel. But weird
atmospheric twists abound, from the Caribbean-flavored “Slow Down Jo” to the
soul prayer “Dear God (Sincerely M.O.F.).” Excesses are tempered and Oberst in
particular has rarely sounded as focused as he does on the sultry “Temazcal” and
the bluegrass-flavored road song “Man Named Truth.” The album could stand a
little pruning; it contains 15 songs when a dozen would’ve sufficed. But in
contrast to most such talent summits, the sum is often greater than the parts.
